We need your help!

Dr. Jones, the Vice President of Student Affairs, has scheduled an appointment with the gay students of FIU. It is officially set for [Thursday] April 6th 2006 at 11:00am. This was made in response to the religious fundamentalists (Jed Heads) who openly insulted the gay students on campus. If you recall, Stonewall, in conjunction with NOW, rallied a petition drive with hundreds of signatures as well as the proposal demanding FIU acquire a GLBT resource center. This was submitted to Dr Jones weeks ago. As a result, she was able to accommodate her busy schedule and make an appointment for us.

Dr. Jones is the ultimate gatekeeper here. It’s very important that we articulate our proposals and concerns in a mature and coherent fashion. We should also dress formally and present ourselves as serious, concerned and informed. We are aiming to have at least 10 students attend (it leaves a better impression.)  Please meet at 10:30 at the Women’s Center so we can prepare and rehearse accordingly.

I cannot reiterate how important the outcome of this meeting is. So be prepared.

Thank you

Afework

DATE: [Thrusday] April 6th 2006

TIME: 10:30 AM (we’re going to rehearse for half hour)

PLACE: Women’s Center (South Campus)

Listen up peeps.

April 19, 2006 (Wednesday) is the day to commemorate all those who have been victimized and killed for their sexual orientation. We've made great progress so far. However, we really need your help. These are the latest updates below:

     1) Shirts – our shirts are being processed (this time

        without the year =P)
     2) Guest speakers – we have 4 people confirmed so far.

        And a possible celebrity.
     3) Posters – we've made several GLBT posters. However, we

        need much more.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is how the event will be run:

             TIME:                           PLACE:
1) 10:00 am- 2:30pm                Fountain

*Everyone will be wearing a Day Of Silence (DOS) shirt. At least 20 students will be sitting in the fountain with purple bandanas around their necks. The people with the purple bandanas will NOT be able to speak the whole day. Those that are not wearing the purple bandanas will be representing the GLBT organizations at each corner. Another set of students will be assigned to educate the passing public. We'd like to have a big poster board where passing students can leave a
comment to express their opinions on DOS.

          TIME:                       PLACE:
2) 3:00 – 6:00pm                GC Pitt

*There will be seats, podiums and chairs for the guest speakers and audience. Prominent speakers from the GLBT community will come to speak for 15 minutes each.  This will be followed by a half hour Q & A session by the audience.

      TIME:                                     PLACE:
3) 6:30-8:30                    Residential (outside)

*Here's where the breaking of the silence will take place. Hopefully there will be food and a band to play. We're trying to make it festive. This is still in the planning stages. We are understaffed and we need volunteers to make this work.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

-There have only been a handful of people that are really working to make this event a success. We NEED your help. For the remainder of the semester, we'll be working on posters and decorum in Stonewall. We'll try to add some games to make it fun. Remember, we also meet Thursdays at the Panther Hall Conference Room for the DOS meetings. It's between 4:00 -5:00, so don't worry if you're a little late. We really need your help people. If anything else, make sure to show up April 19, 2006 at the fountain at 9:30 am.

Let's make this year one to remember :-)

This assembly is not geared towards the preacher and his groupies; rather it’s for the student body. A few of our officers had a meeting Thursday night with some gay-friendly PR representatives. We coordinated several tactics and strategies for gaining the advantage in the arena of public opinion. I don’t know if you read the latest news on THE BEACON, but the three gay students who counter protested were not written very favorably. That’s why it’s important that fellow protestors meet Monday evening to coordinate our right to assembly efficiently and effectively. Remember fellow GLBT members, we are trying to win the hearts and minds of the audience. Not the fundamentalists.

Keep your emotions in check; they’ll want to start a provocation, it’s important to stay on message.

LATEST UPDATES:

We were unable to get a permit today. SOC was closed due to a conference meeting. It will be our top priority number Monday morning. Worst case scenario, if we don’t have the permit by Tuesday we will protest as individuals and not representatives of Stonewall.

Our Sunday preparations have been officially changed for Monday [Feb 6] at 7:00pm at the Women’s Center (south Campus). It’s located at the Graham Center in Room 2200. We strongly recommend that members who plan to protest to take part in this work shop. It will be hosted by Gloria Bauta who has extensive experience in assembling protests and press releases. We encourage individuals to bring their own poster to work on. There might not be enough for all.

Hope to see you all there!

PROTESTORS NEEDED AT FIU

Fellow GLBT members and their friends,

We need your help to stand up against hate!  This past Tuesday, a fundamentalist group was openly chastising gay students at FIU, spreading intolerance and bigotry. Several of our GLBT friends were insulted and humiliated in front of the student body. We need your help to stand up against this intolerance. This upcoming Tuesday [Feb 7th ], they’re coming for round two and we’ll be ready! Tomorrow we’ll get confirmation for our permit and time to protest. We will also be constructing posters and fliers Sunday evening at one of our officer’s house. The address and the rest of the information will be posted the minute we get confirmation.

“Hate the sin and not the sinner is a precept which though easy enough to understand is rarely practiced, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world.”  - Mahatma Gandhi

I am so proud of all you volunteers who showed up for the club fair. Even if it was for 5 minutes, you guys did great! You are the role models that the students who aren’t out look up to. You guys made great role models! And to those members who couldn’t make it today, you were with us in spirit! The event started a little slow, but at the end we got dozens of names of people who very interested in joining our club. In total 29 people signed up with us. That is a-lot. All of them claimed to be very interested.

Once again thank you members. We did it! :)
